What am I doing now and a video thank you

Earlier this month, I wrote about how I got a new job and the role social media played. After a quick and busy start, I am happy to announce that I have joined InXpo as the company’s director of marketing. InXpo is a virtual events provider (e.g. virtual trade show, virtual corporate events, virtual job fairs and more).

Though the company is based in Chicago, I will be working virtually from the Bay Area. This is a good group of people and I’m looking forward to doing some great things for the company. I may not be able to discuss everything I’m doing, but I will try to share what I can. And since I’m also writing for InXpo Insights blog, I will try to post at least once a week here.

In the video message, I tried to thank everyone who has helped us and supported us, including Cam Beck, Jeremiah Owyang, Drew McClellan, CK, Lewis Green, Kenny Lauer, Dennis Shiao, Tom Pick, Steve McDonald, Mack Collier, John Welsh, Jason Falls, Julius Solaris, and my family and friends. Please forgive me if I forgot you – I am getting older and my memory is fading =)

Good News – Did Social Media Have a Role in Getting Me My Job?

I decided to record my first video to let everyone know that I have been able to find a job. For those who read my post about me and my husband being laid off here and on my other blog, this new job does alleviate a lot of pressure on us. While my husband hasn’t secured a position, he has some interesting opportunities percolating.

There has also been a lot written about using social media to find a job, most notably Chris Brogan’s eBook and am interesting view by Jason Falls. For me, I believe that social media didn’t get me my job per se as helped enhance my search.

In the past, Monster.com, HotJobs and Craigs List were new ways to find jobs and now they’re the de facto sources to begin your search. Social media is similar. I’ve told friends that a blog is your new resume. This goes for Facebook and LinkedIn as well. Now more than ever your online reputation is essential for highlighting your skills and expertise. In fact, though my husband started later, his blog (hmmm - title seems familiar?) and efforts on LinkedIn are starting to drive interest for him.

In the end, social media doesn’t get you the job. It’s how you leverage the tools to get the word out and find the opportunities. Funny, isn’t this the same about social media strategy? =)

Thanks to everyone who sent emails and provided help during this time. I plan to write more about my new position once I’m settled in.

Thanks again and have a great week!
